Member Biography

ARTIST STATEMENT

"I consider myself an interpretive artist. Shape, pattern and color catch my eye and become inspiration. From there, I place what I see on canvas, creating a composition that pleases me. When the piece takes its own shape and its own life, I know I've shared my vision.”

Denise Cormier Mahoney was raised in the small farming village of Memramcook in the Atlantic province of New Brunswick, Canada. Her childhood was full of adventures, climbing trees, playing house in the lilac bushes, and wandering the backfields and forests pretending to be lost from civilization. Always visualizing herself an artist as she grew, she received her first art kit when she was 12 and has been hooked ever since. Her formal studies in fine arts were conducted in Halifax at the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design University, located only three hours from her hometown. Getting married and having children directly after college changed her creative inclinations to costume making, children’s art projects, cake making and crafts with her little ones. Now that her two children are young adults, she has begun advancing her artistic pursuits and is active in her professional development. She continues to develop artistically, and plans on pursuing a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts in the not too distant future.

Denise is active in the cultural community as founder and coordinator of the Old Town Silverdale Art Walk, as art chairman of the Kitsap Arts and Crafts Festival in Port Gamble, an active member of WPW and the Federation of Canadian Artists on Granville Island, British Columbia.
