ARTIST STATEMENT"For the most part I spend my creative time in a cloud of pastel dust. Occasionally I revisit the wonderful world of printmaking, and there are still times when I indulge myself in neon constructions. Once in a while I weld corvid- like creatures from scrap metal. I have always been drawn to a partnership between science and art. I take great pleasure in using Crow/Raven as my predominant metaphor, although it is not my sole resource. My body of work includes expressionist landscape, animals, and images created in the encaustic medium. I've recently begun to combine pastel with encaustic in an original way. My focus follows form and line, then color, and always beauty. I believe that beauty is inseparable from power and content, and these are the important considerations in my work." BACKGROUNDJudith classifies herself primarily as an expressionist. She has spent many years as a printmaker, five years developing neon sculptures, and finally, for the last eleven years, finding her niche as a pastellist. Much of her imagery focuses on crows and ravens. She holds a B.A. in Art History and a B.Sc.(as a graduate degree) in Art as Applied to Medicine. She spent eight years as the medical illustrator for McGill University, Faculty of Medicine in Montreal, Quebec, Canada before moving to Olympia, WA in 1972. In juried competition in pastel, she has been accepted into more than 70 national and international exhibits, and has received 32 awards. She holds signature memberships in three national art societies, as well as "distinguished pastellist" status in the Northwest Pastel Society.
