ARTIST STATEMENT
"Growing up on the Kitsap Peninsula, I spent many hours playing on the beach and in the woods near our family home. It was here that I developed an appreciation and love for nature. I’d often walk the shore or roam the woodland trails alone, listening to the forest sounds, watching the waves on the beach or the sunlight moving over the landscape. I’d catch small crabs, tadpoles, frogs and butterflies to observe and marvel over. I love doing quick, gestural drawings with expressive use of line. I also sketch and take reference photos in the field, where color and dramatic light get my creative juices flowing. I bring these back to my studio for creating larger, more finished landscapes in pastel.
Recently, my interest in natural history has led to more work involving animals and birds in their Pacific Northwest environments. Personal observation, field sketching and photographing wildlife all contribute to these painterly new works."
Randena received her Bachelor of Arts degree from The Evergreen State College in 1996. She was a three-year recipient of the Alfred G. & Elma M. Milotte scholarship for her undergraduate work in painting and natural history studies. She has taught design at Olympic College and demonstrated drawing and painting techniques as a guest artist for arts organizations and design and painting classes. Her membership in the Washington Native Plant Society and Audubon Society add to her wealth of personal experience with nature, continually informing her work.
Randena has been exhibiting and receiving awards in regional and national juried shows for over 20 years. She is a member of Women Painters of Washington and the Northwest Pastel Society, earning the title of Distinguished Pastelist in 1995. Randena is represented by Roby King Galleries, Bainbridge Island, WA and Jeffrey Moose Gallery, Seattle.
